Episode 65 - Part 3 of the Orlando Review: WDW

Here is Part 3 of Doug's and Shannon's review of Orlando.  We discuss all four parks in the Walt Disney World Resort (Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney's Hollywood Studios).  This one is LONG...

Another Great Episode

Thanks again for another great episode.

I listen while working and actually like the extra-long podcasts. Since I'm turning it off and on throughout the day, the 2+ hours actually got me through almost an entire workday.

Am I the only one that actually likes Beverly? The World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta has a similar set-up to the Coke exhibit at Epcot. I'd always go for the Beverly... and the Mezzomix.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that thought Stitch was weak.

Normally, I never ever get sick on motion rides, but the first time I rode on Mission: Space, I was really starting to feel really bad in the first few seconds of the ride. Fortunately, I recovered... and rode it again without a problem. I think the difference was that I tried to visualize in my mind the actual (centrifugal) motion we were experiencing even if we couldn't see it.

In some ways, it reminded me of the old Spindle Top ride at Six Flags Over Georgia.

I'm seriously thinking about flying out to Indiana to experience Holiday World while you folks are there.
Wylder

Doug I didn't push it last December, but you have to see Nemo next time.  You will like that song when you hear it used in the musical.

The tram tour, at Hollywood Studios, used to be a little more interesting before they demolished residential street to build Lights, Motors, Acton stunt show.  It was never as good as the Universal Hollywood tour, but it is a waste of time now.

If Shannon wants to know why the Norwegian movie is enjoyable, have her give us a call.  I like the movie, you just have to replace a couple of dated scenes and it is fine.

Enjoyed the review.  Made to day pass a little more quickly.

Just wanted to say I loved the Orlando reviews.  It's been great to hear the reaction from westcoasters comparing the two.  I'm used to all the Orlando Parks, and it was great for me when I finally made it out to the western counterparts 2 years ago.  It was amazing when I finally rode Pirates in Disneyland since it was 100 times better than the counterpart at WDW.  I know the florida version was shoehorned in, but I can't believe they allowed such an inferior version to be installed.

Love all the podcasts, they're really something I've been trying to find for a while.

Crime Donkey, first off - Welcome to the forums (make yourself at home).  Second, RIGHT ON!!! I don't want to sound like a complete jerk on the issue... but, when you compare the WDW Pirates with the DL Pirates it's not even close.  The ride in Disneyland is head and shoulders above the Magic Kingdom... it's actually SAD when comparing the two. Smile

I agree (of course you know this  Razz ).

Glad you're cool with the LONG episodes; I’m always timid about posting the "Time Consuming" podcasts.  I keep thinking "okay... this is the one that will eliminate 500 listeners."  So far my fears are false:!:

I liked the Mezzomix... In fact, I believe it was my favorite of the bunch, but I can't empathize with the whole Beverly thing. Smile  It was too much of .... ....  .... .... ..... I don't know what... it was just too much of something wrong! Laughing

I agree with Stitch... all I have is two words - Doo Doo!  Or maybe one word - Beverly! j/k

As for Mission Space, it was very intense and I can easily see how someone could get sick on it, however the experience is something only Disney can do... Magical!

Now that you mentioned the possibility of meeting us in Holiday World, I am going to continue to harp on the subject until you commit to joining us.  Wink

Take Care my friend!

Okay, you know what........we had a limited amount of time and I didn't want to spend an hour and a half (including waiting time, etc) to watch the show. I'm sorry.

As far as the Norwegian film, I just don't get the oil rig and the helicopter stuff. Is norway like the largest exporter of oil in the world or something?  is it their largest GDP?  I mean, if it is, then i wish they would have explained it or something because we go from laughing trolls to going under an oil thingie in the ocean and then some greek zeus god thing and then onto the video and I just missed where it all tied together. Maybe i should have picked up a book in the Maelstrom gift shop that would have explained it to me.

And I was not shy about saying that I am not big on shows at a theme park.  You can ask Doug, they practically had to drag me to the Aladdin show at the Hyperion in DCA (which was an awesome show).  Doing Hollywood Studios practically killed me what with sitting through Lights, Motor (I was literally dozing off) and the Indiana show and a tram ride, and that movie ride, ummm, and the Walt Disney movie (which was spectacular).  Sitting thru shows makes me so tired, I think because I usually don't get enough sleep on trips and we go, go, go and the adrenaline from the rides (not to mention massive amounts of coffee--and disney's coffee sucked) is the only thing that keeps me going.  So, it's not that I'm anti-shows. I'm anti-fatigue that I know I will sustain from watching the shows.

Well no, the Italians in Italy must like it.

I thought it tasted like carbonated nail polish remover.  Or maybe rubbing alcohol.  cheap, terrible gin maybe?

Those are the nicest things I can say about it. LOL  i thought it was just foul. LOL it made me gag.

I liked whichever one it was that tasted like ginger ale. the others were pretty sweet for my taste. But we don't really drink soda that much anymore. Wylder's wife is crazy about the strawberry soda.  LOL, Wylder and Deanna wouldn't even try the Beverly again!  And Doug, that big dummy, he took the initial first drink and then drank a bunch of the others before filling another cup up with the beverly, knowing how bad it was, and downed it in 1 shot.  I thought he was going to vomit! He was in bad shape after that. LOL
Wylder

Shannon, I have always taken the meaning of the film to be (and this is only my interpretation), a continuation of the viking spirit.  The early Norwegians conquered the seas on viking ships, the current Norwegians tame the seas on oil rigs.  I know it is a stretch, but this the waves and thunder during those scenes it kind of links the two together.  Then, after that, the movie goes on to show the people and culture of Norway, circa 1989.  If you take out the shot of the guy sitting behind the computer that looks like a TRS 80 and the fashion models, I think the film still looks good.  I would like to visit there one day from what I have seen in the movie.  Considering the movie was created to spur tourism to Norway, I think it did its job ok.

Hey, I just listened to this episode today at work and I love the extra long episodes as well.
I've been anticipating this show for a while, and I've loved hearing what you guys think of my home parks after visting them for the first time.

Two small mistakes I found though, that I'd like to point out:

-On space mountain, Alpha and Omega are actually mirror images of each other. Both tracks have the same number of drops and turns, and they are the same size and speed, except reversed.  However, for some reason, most people seem to prefer Omega (including myself, however, I think it is just because SM was my first roller coaster and that was the side I rode first)

-Also, Mission space produces up to 2.5 G's, and the Gravitron can produce up to 4 G's at it's maximum spin rate.

Of course, I'm just being a coaster nerd, and I'm not criticizing, just sharing pointless info.

And I actually love Ellen's Energy Adventure, particularly the soundtrack.

Wonderful show this week!

Great episode! Glad yall had a great time at WDW! Love the comparisons to Disneyland, because I've never been and it's nice to hear the differences between the two.

Epcot, lemme say, I have never wanted to go to Epcot so bad until I listen to this episode lol. I've always wanted to go there but never put that on the top of my list because of the lack of thrill rides. Now i feel like it has more to offer... plus I LOVE EATING lol. I might check Epcot out next time I go there.

Animal Kingdom, glad yall liked it even though yall weren't there long. IMO, I think Dinosaur is similar to Indiana Jones, but I haven't been on Indiana Jones. As a matter of fact, I think I heard from someone that they have the same layout... Do yall think they're similar?

Hollywood Studios, I agree it is always crowded for me, especially near ToT.

Side note: So what's up with the coffee? lol what exactly is wrong with it? lol

Also, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say yall didn't go to any of the attractions on I-Drive?

Yea, that's what I was thinking too, but I wasn't sure if that was correct.

the coffee tasted like it was roasted in burnt maple syrup.  that's the best way i can describe it.

I have also heard that, and have ridden both many times.  We rode Alpha and Omega a couple hours apart and I have to say the right side had a much better ride.  It felt faster, with more airtime.  When we got off the ride, me, my wife, Doug and Shannon turned to each other and commented on how much better the right side was.

On a different note, I am bummed that when SM is renovated, you will no longer be able to watch the coaster while waiting in line.  I guess it is just what I grew up with and hate to see it change.

WOW!  I had no clue that both side of Space Mountain were the same... for some reason the right  side seemed better.  As for Mission Space, I could see where Gravatron has more Gs.  I just love the whole immersive experience of Mission Space though... helluva good time! Smile

Thanx for the heads up Jumboshrmp!

You're right on it being an Italian drink, but it's actually not in Italy.. it's in Club Cool which is in Future World; close to Spaceship Earth.

Epcot has definitely grown on me as I've gotten older.  It's now my favorite Disney park by far.  And I'd really recommend going there during the food and wine festival since there are a lot more things going on back in world showcase.

Did you guys hit Big Thunder? I practically grew up at Disneyland (40+ now), and only just made it to the Magic Kingdom with my son a few weeks ahead of you. It's impossible not to compare - fun and a little jarring too.

Better at the World:
The Tea Cups! How could you miss this? The suits in legal wrecked the original years ago - a cup full of linebackers couldn't work up a good dizzy. Disneyworld's is still in its full, nausea inducing glory.

Big Thunder - after 3 rides, I'm sure its longer. That side to side roll is unique to the FLA version.

Splash Mt - MUCH longer, story makes better sense. Logs seem to fit the flume better. Remember when D'Land's logs didn't scrape their way through?

TTA - Duh. I always loved a mellow cruise on the Peoplemover. I guess that makes me a traditionalist.

Haunted Mansion - Escher room, nice! Ghost writers too.

OTOH, the World's Buzz, an awful, dreary, black-light nightmare. ZZZZ

And throwing in the Studio, my ToT fanatic son found the original too slow to develop. I think he's right.

Just thought I'd share. Thanks for the podcast - we enjoy it.

Still listening to this episode and loving it!

As a Space Mountain Cast Member over at WDW I can confirm both sides are exactly the same. Just mirror images. So if you're right handed, you'll find left turns faster and vice versa. (Something like that) Which is why certain people think certain sides are better.

Same exact drops and everything though. The A side, which is on the left when you enter is 10 feet longer though, that's the only difference.

But alas, Epcot is my favorite park ever as well. Glad you guys loved it too. And I agree with 99% of what you talked about in Magic Kingdom vs Disneyland. Disneyland is SO much better, it isn't even funny. It's just sad how terrible Magic Kingdom is when compared to Disneyland, at least in my opinion. ;]

LOL, way harsh man.......LOL, I wouldn't go so far as to call it terrible! LOL  Disneyland has way more stuff because it's the only park. And, when you figure sizing into the equation, Magic Kingdom was more comfortable to navigate, I thought.  Of course, I like Disneyland more, but Magic Kingdom is a worthy Fraternal twin, I felt.  now, if you are comparing Pirates to Pirates, that's a different story.......LOL

And, ummmm, wow, never would have guessed that SM was the same ride just mirrored. crazy how your brain can be so totally fooled!

Since I grew up with the Florida Pirates I have always loved it.
When I visited Disneyland for the first time when I was 12 years old, I had no idea that the Pirates there was any different. My dad and I were blown away by how long it was, and at the end of the ride I was expecting a huge drop after the lift, and I wanted to get off.
Of course, I thought it was much, much better, but I still appreciate the Florida version and ride it multiple times every time I go to WDW.

Pal, thanx for joining the forum!

Unfortunately, I just can't stomach the Tea Cups period.  I'm a total wuss when it comes to spin and puke rides.  Embarassed

I agree with Splash Mt & Haunted Mansion - Spectacular!  As for ToT, I kind of have to agree; it took a while to get the thrills, plus in DCA the airtime is beyond amazing! Very Happy

Thanx for the post my friend.

Very good trip report guys! I enjoyed hearing it.

Only thing I really have to say is you made a mistake by not eating at Primetime in Disney's Hollywood Studios. One of my best memories is from when we ate at Primetime. Sure, the food is mediocre, and probably the same thing they have at Sci-Fi, but the experience is hilarious.

I recommend it to anyone who is going to be down there!
dougscoastergirl

Is Primetime the one where you have to mind your table manners?  If any of you ever eat with Doug, you will note that this is not one of his stronger characteristics (not that he's a slob or anything, LOL) and he doesn't really like being told what to do by his mommy, so he had ruled that restaurant out, LOL.  Also, though, it was completely booked......I was willing to give it a try (but I don't like to be mommied either, especially now that I am the mommy).  We'll have to try it next time and take our kids and show them that this is what table manners are, LOL.

LOL, on a side note, I had no idea what ToT was....... I didn't realize it until I read Doug's reply........you guys need to put legends into your posts, I swear........LOL. I'm not so good with the acronyms, I haven't been schooled in that art, not an avid texter.   LOL, quick, someone start a thread with all of the acronyms so non-coaster freaks such as myself can still be a part of this board!   Laughing    Wink

Yep. You gotta "keep your elbows off of momma's fermica!" and "eat all your veggies, or momma'll be mad!". It is quite the experience. They WILL embarrass you as much as they can in front of the whole resturant! Though, if you show you don't want to play along, they'll leave you alone and become regular waiters. I hope, Cousin Tom, THE best cast member in the "World" is still at this resturant. He was by far the best one there.

Here's an example of a "timeout": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP5OtqaIgyM
DON"T screw with a waiter. The guy at the table next to us did, and was he humiliated. Here's an example of what they'd do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QtH0cC2gDQ&feature=related

We actually had to do this. We were told if you want to get in "trouble", which you should it's part of the experience, open up the sugar packets on the table. They got me back again, though. It was my birthday so they sang incredibly badly and loudly to me and wouldn't let me sit until it "sounded good".

Food & Wine at Epcot

Just finished catching up on the Season Pass.  I really liked listening to your review of the Orlando Theme parks .  While I didn't grow up in Florida I have lived here for the past 10 years and it was cool to hear a new perspective on the parks.  If you and Shannon loved Epcot, you totally need to plan a trip there during the Food and Wine Festival.  It usually starts the weekend of my birthday in September and we have gone there to celebrate for the past three years (our fourth trip there will be the last weekend of September this year).  Even being 9 months pregnant could not keep me away from all that yummy food this past year.

p.s. I love Shannon's profile pic.  I'm glad to see my husband isn't the only one who likes to "wear" his child around the parks.
dougscoastergirl

LOL, kerri!

I was so disappointed when the kids outgrew that thing!! now we have to carry them around when they don't want to ride in the stroller and it sucks! LOL
KerriRocker

yeah, I do not look forward to that day and since Morgana is growing so quickly I know it will come soon.  I heard Doug say that your little one was turning two.  Happy Birthday!

^Thanx!  Our Youngest turned 2 on March 5th!  His attitude is as BIG as ever!
