Word is spreading that Kings Dominion (in Doswell, VA) is planning a major attraction for 2010. This attraction is currently being built behind the Anaconda coaster near the back of the park. There is wide speculation that it could be an Intamin Giga coaster. Stats are that the ride would be as tall as the park's iconic 1/3 scale Eiffel Tower replica which is about 350ft. Kings Dominion is keeping the project secret and will probably not officially announce it to the public until around or after August.
Kings Dominion already has an ample share of launch coasters. This, however, looks like it's going to be a big change from that.
On ThemeParkReview.com, there are pictures of some of the tracks and there is also a closeup of one of the packages found on the park's parking lot:
I saw this on screamscape and the talk about it on In the loop podcast. Now is the giga coaster the type like Top Thrill Dragster, Xceleator, and kingda ka at Cedair and Knoot's , Six Flag's? After reading that great debate on the forums here I'm curious about riding one. Now I remember that old Xcelerator ride at Kings Dominion I never got ride it. First the line was long to wait and it kept breaking down. I remember seeing a bra fall off during it's run.Hehe
You think this is there replacement? If so, the size of that is a big upgrade from the Xceleator where I found it to small. I can't wait

This is just an educated guess based off of Cedar Fair's experience with the hydraulic launch coasters, but I dont see them building one again anytime soon.
TTD has been a maintenance nightmare and cost them a LOT more money than they had expected. Xcelerator wasn't AS bad, but was still pretty costly. I dont know this for sure, so take it with a grain of salt, but I've heard the John Hildebrandt of Cedar Point has admitted that, in hindsight, CP would not have added TTD. Maintenance is, afterall, the reason they removed Hypersonic XLC from Kings Dominion and I can't envision them swapping one expensive, temperamental ride for another.
My personal guess is cable lift, but its just that... a guess. LIMs are another definite possibility and I would love to see another Maverick-esque LIM powered lift.
Either way, I'm sure it'll be a fantastic coaster with some VERY high G forces... just look at the double spine on that new Intamin track! It looks like its ready hold up a train travelling at the speed of light filled with dark matter.

^It's probably a cable lift because does kd need a new launch coaster??? Also like mentioned above hydroponic launch coaster are a money pit and brake down alot! Just look at kinda ka, broken right now. It's going to just be a huge hyper coaster with crazy air-time

My guess - The World's tallest traditional steel coaster ie: Millenium Force.

that sounds right!

^ I agree

There is, of course, the option that we will see a new lift style that hasn't been done yet. Intamin has a tendency to push the envelope with new technology and innovative ideas, so I think it seems entirely possible that they have cooked up something nifty for us. After all, they have almost completely redone track, why not break out some sort of fancy new hi tech propulsion system as well?
Of course, the question that needs to follow that would be "what haven't we seen yet?"
I, for one, can't think of too many more possibilities... in fact, I have trouble coming up with any. But perhaps some of you do so lets get creative with this idea!

Maybe the US is finally getting an Aquatrax. The bulky track pieces are like no coaster I've ever seen, especially not a giga coaster. But yep, just have to wait and see

And Xcel has probably topped TTD on Maintenance trouble. There isn't a single day it does not break down or rollback several times during the day. Also, since Haunt they were having major problems with it, and it was down temporarily for 2 months and cost them several million to get the ride limping agin. TTD has nothing on Xcel, believe me.

well, much to my surprise, this new coaster will definitely be a launch. i was at KD yesterday and spent some time examing the track. there were quite a few sections with the most immense structure ive ever seen. it makes intamins previous box track look like a bunch of tooth picks. after looking a bit more closely at these parts, there is a launch trough running down the middle of them. so now we know its another hydraulic coaster. but the huge track makes me think that maybe we will see a wing rider, which id be thrilled about!
thoughts?

I know it doesn't seem possible, however it's a giga. Now you might be on to something with the *Special* Lift System... However, it won't be a launch though. Also, about an hour ago, the lift crest was placed on site.
i had forgotten that a cable lift would also (obviously) require a cable trough...
so my money is back on cable lift
Doug_Barnes
^No Doubt. However, I think you were partially right with the HUGE lift track designed for this coaster. I think we might see a new sophisticated cable system for this one; something that'll make Millennium's cable system look ancient (just a prediction ).
Oh man, I'm sorry guy's. I should of look at the link source site. This video is a fake. I got to give it to them it's a pretty well done one. Screamscape has done a check and posted it as a fake. Sorry E tapley0687 I didn't mean to mislead here. It look real too me.

Hmmm at 0:20 in the background behind the elevator observation tower there's a structure that resembles something like TTD and KK. I haven't been keeping up with this much but now this makes me want to look more into what's going on...

It doesnt look appear to be 90 degrees.... I'd say it more closely resembles the fourth picture from this gallery:
Although Im not sure why parks to utilize viral videos like this one. This one had the enthusiast community all hyped up for a little bit. I just think that parks need to play the game a little more. I like what CP did when they were building Maverick. Tony & Tyler kept dishing out little hints in the blog, there were signs around the construction site and little peep holes in the fence.
It got everyone talking about it over a year before the ride even opened. and got them a lot of very cheap advertisement via word of mouth.

Coaster Crew real video of KD new Coaster
Here's video update of KD new coaster with a little coaster design talk. Clint goes into the fence, for real to show something real and NOT Fake(sorry). I making sure this time it's real.
