Metal Heads

anyone else out there fellow metal heads?
if you are what bands do you listen to?

and are you going to mayhem fest?  Twisted Evil
screaminman11

Yes definitely into metal. But I like a lot of the christian metal/hardcore bands out there today, such as Inhale Exhale, Demon Hunter, and August Burns Red. I am not going to mayhem fest, but my friend went last time and saw UnderOath and said it was awesome.
Doug_Barnes

I won't be heading out to Mayhem this year (although Shannon will be serving alcohol for fundraising on the event).  But yes - I'm a HUGE Metal Fan!

Big on Killswitch Engage, Opeth, Lamb of God, Silent Civilian, Black Dahlia Murder, Slipknot, Shadows Fall, As I Lay Dying, In Flames, Trivium, etc.

Screaminman11, great to hear you're into the Christian metal scene.  I've been listening to those bands for years... I loved Living Sacrifice, Mortification, old Embodyment (now the Famine), Crimson Thorn, Extol, etc.  Plus like you mentioned all the new Solid State bands like Demon Hunter, August Burns Red (Messengers was AMAZING!!), etc.

The Christian bands I've been really into for the last couple of years are Becoming the Archetype, The Showdown, Woe of Tyrants... as mentioned before the Famine is a must!  I’m a “real” sucker for Melodic Death Metal!!

I guess you found out I can talk about Metal all day!
screaminman11

Ok Doug now you just really hit the spot with all that. Seems that we are on the same page with just about everything, from theme parks...to metal music? HAHA that is freaking awesome!. Now you have to be on one of my shows at some point, or vice versa. I would have to figure out how to get the whole Skype thing working. But seriously, I think that is just crazy!

Last summer, I went to a show out in Pomona to Demon Hunter's STRONGER THAN HELL tour. The Lineup was:

Demon Hunter
Living Sacrifice (Who Just got back together Very Happy )
Oh, Sleeper
The Famine
Advent

Simply one of the best shows I have ever seen.

yea im starting to get more into the christian metal stuff. my friend turned me on to august burns red and becoming the archetype and they are sick  Razz
also doug (since you say you are a lamb of god fan) have you heard the new album wrath? because that truly is one of the greatest metal albums ive ever heard and the no fear energy tour with lamb of god, children of bodom, suicidal tendencies, municipal waste, and god forbid was one of the sickest shows i think ive ever seen.
Doug_Barnes

I think Lamb of God's "Wrath" is a great album; many hints of Pantera and Testament.  The guitar work is tremendous.  Of course with that being said, nothing has come close to "As The Palaces Burn" yet.  That is still their most technical and original outing.

As for the best Metal albulms in years... you just mentioned them, Becoming the Archetype.  "Dichotomy" is an amazing album that pushed this band to the top of my list.  If you haven't heard it yet, here's the iTunes link: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObject...ewAlbum?id=296359564&s=143441
Good Stuff!  I also recomend the new Woe of Tyrants http://itunes.apple.com/WebObject...ewAlbum?id=296747838&s=143441
Also, since you mentioned them earlier... God Forbid's new album "Earthsblood" is pretty sweet.  It has a ton of 80's melodic touches in it. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObject...ewAlbum?id=303893823&s=143441

I'm going to stop before I start posting every album in my library.

Travis, I would love to come on your show and talk Metal Bands... It's the next best thing to Theme Parks. Wink

BTW- That is an incredible line-up.  Living Sacrifice, Demon Hunter, and The Famine in the same show... Awesome!

Also, you mentioned you like Underoath.  I actually listened to them when they first started, so I actually have their first two album (you know the CDs that are selling for over $80 a piece on Amazon & Ebay).  My wife thinks I'm a nut case for holding on to them... maybe I am. Smile
screaminman11

Definitely! We when we have a show where we talk about music and stuff like that, I will definitely give you a call and have you on our show. I'll just have to figure out how to work that all out regarding the technology available.

No need to be a nut case for holding onto old Underoath. I think that is awesome. The orginial singer, Dallas Taylor, has a new band that is more Southern Rock, but still awesome called MAYLENE AND THE SONS OF DISASTER. What a name! But I actually went to go see Underoath one time and met Aaron Gillespie, the drummer, and since I am a drummer myself, that guy is a nut case when he plays live. I can't believe just the amount of energy that he puts out on each show.

Top 5 Metal Albums of 2008
1. "I Swear..." by Inhale/Exhale (More Hardcore, with insane guitar-work)
2. "Lost In The Sounds Of Separation" by Underoath
3. "Back Breaker" by The Showdown
4. "Dichotomy" by Becoming The Archetype
5. "First Came The Law" by Once Nothing (No longer together, but think of the love child between August Burns Red and Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster-Classify themselves as BLUE-COLLAR METAL)
Doug_Barnes

^hahaha, you are cracking me up Travis.  I have met both Dallas and Aaron as well (on their Changing of Times tour) ... AND... I am also a drummer.  I've been playing for about 15 years now.

Since you did it - I'm going to have to drop my favs of 2008:

1) Slipknot- All Hope Is gone
2) Becoming The Archetype- Dichotomy
3) Trivium- Shogun
4) Pantokrator- Aurum
5) The Famine- The Raven and The Reaping
6) Opeth- Watershed
7) The Showdown- Backbreaker
Cool Unearth- The March
9) All That Remains- Overcome
10) Haste The Day- Dreamer
screaminman11

Ok seriously Doug this is probably the best conversation on this forum right now! And it has nothing to do with theme parks at all. Next show for me, I was thinking about doing a show about hobbies, and since we are both into metal music, that would be a good part of the show to talk about. Most of the time, I usually tell people about these bands and they are like, HUH? who is that?

But it is nice to know that someone shares my taste! And I added you on Skype earlier. Can't wait for the new episode to hear about this. I will talk with my co-host about getting you on for the next show.

finally someone else that agrees with me that all hope is gone was one of the greatest albums of last year. almost all my friends (even the metal heads) didnt like that album at all. overcome was also fairly underated i thought and i absolutely loved shogun but i cant find anyone else who likes trivium. im not sure id be able to put together a top list just because i really like listening to everything but if i did make a list one album that would definitely NOT be on that list is death magnetic. i myself am a pretty big metallica fan but the only albums that i like are master of puppets, ride the lightning, and kill em all. death magnetic seemed like there were 16 different riffs a song and a total of 12 awesome riffs on the album so its like i would enjoy the first 30 seconds of a song and the rest of it would be almost unbearable to listen to. one album that i think you missed though doug was twilight of the thunder gods by amon amarth
if you havent heard of the band they are this hella sick sweedish viking-metal band and i highly recommend you check em out. they sound like iron maiden if dave murray and adrian smith just tuned their guitars down two steps lol.
and if you couldnt tell by some of the lingo i used i too am a musician. i have been playing guitar for about 2 and a half years now i think. but music and theme parks are definitely the two greatest things in the world.  Smile

Wazomike... Where to begin... I'll start by saying I pretty much agree with everything you said.

Many people don't care for Slipknot's newest album because they are maturing with each album.  I think most people want to hear the "Drop B Choas" rather than a beautifully structured song, which this album is FULL of (don't get me wrong though, I love the crazy s*** too).  Slipknot put their Time and Souls into each of these songs and turned them into "actual" compositions.

Death Magnetic is awful.  Not as bad as St. Anger, but not much better.

Amon Amarth... come on man! j/k  I love Amon Amarth; I have Once Sent , The Crusher, The Avenger, Fate of Norns, With Oden on Our Side.  As for Twilight of the Thunder Gods - you're right I did miss that one.  However, I actually did not care for it as much as With Oden or The Crusher (which is still my favorite AA Album).  Also, I admit I'm always disappointed with each new Amon Amarth albulm because I'm still waiting for an Epoch Song to top "Victory March."  I know it's silly, but whatever. Wink
