Theme parks record you every move to sell as “Your Day” DVD

Alton Tower is the place and what they sell is “Your Day” DVD

Imagined being recorded at the theme park the whole time your there only to have a DVD of you visit ready when leaving. That’s what Alton Towers has done. With a wrist RFID band it antenna transmit a signal to the 36 cameras planted around the rides where once you near it starts recording everything you do.

This is part of  Your Day” dvd program.. Where you buy the option of single ride or multi-ride package. Once you decide you get a wrist band with a RFID antenna that activates the cameras.  Here’s a video to explain.

It’s pretty cool tech, but a bit creepy. Privacy seems to be the big thing when it comes to this tech being at the parks. Having a DVD of your time at the park but giving up a certain type of privacy may be hard to shallow in the US, but it may come early here then you think. Here’s a summary of the idea.

Quote:
YourDay invites theme park guests to star in their own motion picture souvenir of their day in the park.

As guests move from ride to ride, they are filmed by cameras strategically located to record the highlights of their day, and also to promote the park looking its best. The RFID wristband worn by each participating guest permits the system to individually tag each personalized video clip, which is digitally stored, awaiting retrieval and insert-editing into a movie. At the end of their visit, guests have the chance to buy a professionally produced ‘movie’ of their day, featuring unique personalized footage of them and their friends or family having a great time. The YourDay movie is notable for high production values, spectacular photography and a stirring soundtrack

It’ even won a IAAPA award.

YourDay wins technology award at IAAPA. YourDay has been awarded the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) Honorable Mention for its entry as ‘Best New Product and Impact Award: Technology Applied to Amusements’ for its innovative YourDay installation at Alton Towers at this year’s IAAPA Attractions Expo 2007 in Orlando, Florida

Here’s a simple video of some “Your Day” dvd.

Now here in the US privacy is a big issue. So how would you feel about this. Would you go for it. You won’t need a Camera anymore. The park does it for  you. But before you think it won’t happened here. Rememeber a ride called “Hollywood Rip Rocket Ride” the coaster where a youtube video records you on the ride. Yeah. Also Walt Disney parks are really looking into this tech no much that they have already have a system in place. Check out Jim Hill Media and his co-podcast show where talks about it and seen it in action.  So, this is coming; watch out, because they might be watching you more closely.

After watching some of these videos, I will have to say that a lot of the footage does look very nice and cleaned up, especially the videos taken of you.  Being a photo/video guy, I noticed those things.  But I don't know if I'm still convinced that I would do something like this.  While a lot of the fun stuff happens on the rides, if I'm with a big crowd of people, a lot of the fun stuff happens in between rides just wandering through the park.  If someone had a camera and followed us between the rides, that might make it better.

But then again, whatever happened to just going to the theme park and having a good old time and not worrying about capturing memories?
Gix

I have a your day dvd from alton towers at home.
They had this system allready installed in 2007, when i was there.

It works simple but is really buggy. We where with a group of 8 people in the park. Everybody got a wristband when we enter the park. Inside the wristband there is a RIFD chip.

All thought it would be nice, but at the end non of the bands included all the rides whe have been on. Sometime one did and the other didn't.

The footage was oke, but too mutch of standard footage / commuricals.  Where they mix your group inside of it.

But i love the idea, if it works better. Don't know if it does now.

Yeah, that kinda sucks.  The last thing you want is to have a video of your day, a video you already paid for, peppered with a bunch of commercials for a place you already spent your $$ at.  That's lame, predictable and lame.

And, as far as the privacy issue goes, I think it's a little awkward actually.  I mean, I think I would feel a little uncomfortable.  You have no control over what happens to all of that footage and who knows what will end up on YouTube! LOL
