TV Specials

Whats up everyone,

Have you seen a commercial for an upcoming theme park, roller coaster, disney, etc. special? Then post it and let us know the time and station it will be aired on.... if possible maybe add a little description of what it's about.

When I was younger... and still to this day, I was one of those dorks who would watch almost every special that the Travel and Discovery Channel would show lol.... even recorded a few of them..... I'm sure I'm not the only one.... lol.

I know around Memorial Day we usually begin to see a lot of the water park and theme park specials. So be on the look out!

I love when Travel Channel and Discovery have their coaster specials. I remember awhile back when they did the big thing on Cedar Point. I think the show was even called, "The World's Largest Amusement Park." Travel channel only seems to focus on food now though Sad

From what I hear on In The Loop, guest host Pete Owens, said the Travel Channel will be in the park shooting for another special. So be on the look out in the future for another Dollywood special on Travel Channel!

Last night I watched a TV documentary about Dollywood from 1999.  It was a British art crtiic going round the park.  He has an interest in theme parks and what they say about a specific community and culture.  It was called DOLLYWOOD - OR BUST.

It was ... interesting.

I, of course, would have liked a detailed documentary about the working and designing of the rides - but this was about how the traditional Smoky Mountains are is reflected in the park, and how Dolly's background and persona is subliminally inflicted upon you.  And why people who don't even like Dolly go to her theme park.

Also talked about was the religious aspect in the park - and the presenter pointed out the park is a bit of a contradiction within itself - because, whilst the park has its own chapel - the park is constantly throwing food at you (gluttony) and the park itself is admiring one idol that isn't "The Lord".

It made a change though to see a serious documentary that didn't focus on the thrills and the screams.

special on old theme park from PBS

A while back PBS did special about  "Great Old Amusement Parks" and Coney Island.  I check to see tv schedule for them but no listing were avail.  I did find youtube of the whole Great Old Amusement Parks, but it's divided into six parts.  I love watching these history of the parks manly because there a lot of things that happen way back in the past (1860-now) that can be seen in today's parks. There was once a old Discovery Channel program that did a History of amusement parks dated them back in the BC era to the Europe age where the idea of theme park came from. I remember a Disney build one where they went though the parks in a history of construction view point.  I don't see that anymore since Modern Marvels 2 came out with there Disney one that I find a little less informative and more commercial.
Here all the youtube video of  "Old Great Amusement Parks" that is also on DVD.

This park looks awesome. I hate it when good theme parks are torn down. I saw a recent update on the land of Opryland park on "A walk in the park" podcast. I think they show the bear still there.

There selling the DVD to this, but it's $75 dollars.

I actually bought The entire Season of Disney with Samantha Brown on Itunes. I wanted to see how things were for my big return to disney last holiday.

I wish more theme park special can be offer online. I like Itunes, Hulu, or amazon demand as a way to get them. Maybe there should be a theme park network. If that channel devoted to video games is coming why not theme park channel.
e_tapley0687

^ Yea, that's the one! Really great park, but no longer here. The mall is doing ok, but the park would be doing so much better if it were here.

I think you've convinced me to go on itunes and get a season of disney lol

Wild Rides with Matt Dillion. 80's roller coaster special!

Here's an old special I found from the 80's. It's superstar Matt Dillion talking about roller coaster with great rock bands. I luv the 80's. I found this interesting see all these parks back in a prime age. It's fun to see how MTV style they try to be with this special. The VHS is still on sale for $1.24 to $24.00 at amazon. The picture and this link will take you to the sale site.

I stumbled on that show last night on accident, and wow, just wow.  It doesn't have anything to do with rides (naturally) but it is pretty spectacular how they put it most of it together in basically 1 night on a third shift!

I mean, I know it's her job, but this woman was able to name, specifically, where these random ornaments that he would pull out of bins went.  There's over 100,000 ornaments in that place.  Cool.  LOL

I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a watch, pretty cool.
